South Main Mosaic Art Walk
Along South Main Street a series of eight public art installations by local artists were installed in fall 2014. Christina Lanzl was co-curator of this Downtown Memphis Commission initiative. The goal of the project was to enliven underutilizes locations along main street with innovative public art installations of a temporary nature. The projects ranged from a kinetic wave sculpture by Jonathan Auger reminiscent of Ned Kahn's installations to a lenticular mural by Stephanie Cosby and Eszter Sziksz. Nick Pena's baby grand piano installation on the Huling Avenue loading dock invited passers-by to play a tune. A food can mural collaboration in the windows of the Adler Hotel visualized cartoon-like characters, while two colorful painted murals by Marcellus Lovelace and Brandon Marshall with Kenny Hayes celebrated historic Memphis moments. Lance Turner's mural "Jay" featured a rasterized painting technique familiar from newsprint, a style popularized by Chuck Close. Turner's portrait of punk rock icon Jay Reatard read only from a distance. Last not least, the Metal Museum installed the "Larger Than" flower bouquet in the pocket park at the corner of Talbot.
